Abdullahi finds the right opportunity through the Restart Scheme

When Abdullahi joined the Restart Scheme in March 2026, he was looking to return to work after spending around a year out of employment. He had previously worked in a range of cleaning and environmental services roles, including as a street cleaner, refuse collector and tip operative for Birmingham City Council.

Although he was motivated to return to work, balancing employment with his caring responsibilities as a single parent presented challenges. He was also dealing with accommodation difficulties, which added further uncertainty to his situation.

With support from his Serco Job Coach, Farhiya, Abdullahi received regular job search assistance, guidance on suitable vacancies and referrals to training opportunities. Farhiya worked closely with him throughout his time on the Restart Scheme, helping him stay focused on his goals while identifying opportunities that would fit around his family commitments.

One of the key steps in his journey was completing a Sector-Based Work Academy Programme (SWAP) in Cleaning. While he already had experience in the sector, the training helped refresh his skills and increase his confidence as he prepared to return to work.

Alongside the training, Abdullahi maintained regular contact with Farhiya and the wider team, receiving ongoing support, encouragement and access to suitable vacancies.

His commitment and determination paid off when he secured employment as a Cleaner with CleanTec, providing greater stability for him and his family.

Reflecting on his experience, Abdullahi said:

“The journey was great, to be honest. I have no complaints. I’m so happy to be with you guys and you helped me out. The training helped me learn more and gave me confidence in the role. You phoned me, asked me what I was doing, what the next step was, and tried to help me by sending me opportunities to get back into work. You care first. The communication with me was so helpful and the opportunity you gave me from the beginning was also helpful too. I really appreciate your help. It really helped and I’m glad now I’m getting through this situation.”

Securing employment has given Abdullahi renewed confidence and greater stability as he works towards providing a better future for his children. He is now focused on succeeding in his new role, maintaining long term employment and continuing to improve his circumstances.

Looking ahead, Abdullahi is also interested in self-employment within the cleaning sector and has already begun exploring future opportunities. For now, his priority is building on the progress he has made and creating a stable future for himself and his family.
