After spending 16 years out of the labour market raising her family, Alena felt unsure of how to take the first step back into employment. Her long career break affected her confidence, and she felt disconnected from modern recruitment processes and employer expectations. With limited recent experience and digital skills that needed refreshing, returning to work seemed overwhelming.
In early 2025, Alena joined the Restart Scheme and was paired with her Job Coach from Serco, Antonio, who quickly recognised her potential. Together, they focused on rebuilding her confidence, refreshing her skills, and helping her navigate a job market that had changed significantly in 16 years. Antonio supported Alena with a full CV refresh, guidance on tailoring applications, and introduced her to AI tools to help make job‑search tasks easier and more efficient. He also provided interview‑skills coaching, confidence‑building sessions, and regular motivational support to help her recognise the valuable strengths she already had, from excellent communication skills to strong organisation and a willingness to learn.
Alena attended a series of workshops including Digital Skills, Confidence‑Building, and Interview Skills. These sessions played a key role in helping her feel prepared, capable, and ready to return to the world of work.
With her confidence restored, Alena began exploring opportunities and approached her local Post Office, where she completed the necessary checks and successfully secured a part‑time Clerk Assistant role. Although her official contract is 4 hours per week, her reliability and performance have led to regular additional shifts, averaging around 12 hours a week. The role fits perfectly around her childcare and household responsibilities, giving her the work–life balance she hoped for.
Alena said
“Antonio’s support helped me build my confidence again after so many years away from work. The workshops, CV support and his coaching made me feel capable and ready. I’m so happy to be back in a routine and working again.”
Alena officially started work at the end of November 2025, proudly receiving her first wages shortly afterwards. She continues to check in with Antonio for in‑work support and is thriving in her role.
