When Mahyar joined the Restart Scheme, he was rebuilding his life in the UK after arriving in February 2024 and being forced to leave his home country due to political circumstances. Despite holding a degree in electrical engineering and having a strong work history, his qualifications were not recognised in the UK, and he faced additional barriers including adapting to a new system and improving his English.
After spending time attending ESOL classes and engaging with Jobcentre Plus, Mahyar was referred to the Restart Scheme for more tailored support. He began working with his Job Coach from Ingeus, Tanneyshia, who supported him in refining his CV, exploring career options, and identifying the right pathway to match his skills and experience.
With a background that included several years of driving, Tanneyshia identified HGV training as a key opportunity. However, Mahyar initially faced a setback, as he was told he would need to wait due to eligibility requirements around holding a UK driving licence. This left him feeling discouraged, despite his extensive experience.
Recognising his potential, Tanneyshia contacted the training provider to advocate on his behalf, highlighting his years of experience, including driving heavy goods vehicles. Following this, the provider agreed to offer Mahyar a place on the course.
Mahyar began his HGV training in April and has since made strong progress. He has successfully passed his Theory Test, CPC and Hazard Perception Test, and is now preparing for his practical driving test.
Mahyar said:
“I want to build my future here in the UK. Driving is my passion, and I’m looking forward to becoming an international HGV driver.”
With a clear direction and growing confidence, Mahyar is now focused on securing work as an HGV driver and continuing to progress within the logistics sector.
