Restart Scheme helps Richard move forward after a long and challenging job hunt

After more than 20 years working in the Post Office and cash‑handling industry, Richard unexpectedly found himself unemployed in August 2024. At 57, and after applying for 156 jobs with only two interviews, his confidence had begun to fade and he felt unsure about his next steps.

In September 2025, he was referred to the Restart Scheme, where he met his adviser, Ntorin from Ingeus. This support marked a turning point. Richard said he had been feeling stuck and unsure of his prospects, but meeting someone who genuinely believed in his skills made a real difference.

From the start, Ntorin helped him rebuild his confidence, strengthen his CV and approach his job search with new techniques. Over time, Richard began to recognise the value of his long-term experience and feel more optimistic about finding the right opportunity.

Richard came across an opportunity at a Jobcentre presentation and felt confident enough to apply straight away. Out of 40 applicants, only eight passed the selection stages and Richard was one of them. He then completed a training programme aligned to Network Rail standards, managing to finish the 10‑week course in just two weeks. His hard work paid off when he passed the final exam and was offered the role.

Richard said:

“Ntorin was the first person I found who really wanted to help me. After losing my job of 20 years, I couldn’t see any light at the end of the tunnel. I was disappointed and tired after 156 job applications and only two interviews. He gave a personal touch to everything he did. I finally felt like I was in the right place at the right time. It wasn’t a nice feeling living on benefits. I wanted a job, and now that I’ve got one, I will do everything I can to stay in work and move up the ladder.”

Richard is already focusing on developing his career further. His goal now is to progress within the business as he continues as he continues to build a long‑term future in his new role.
