Serco has secured a Department for Education (DfE) contract to deliver the Level 4 Diploma School Business Manager, supporting the development of skilled operational leadership across England’s schools.
The 12 month programme begins in April and is accredited by the Institute of Leadership & Management.
It is designed for aspiring and existing school business managers who play a critical role in the effective running of schools, overseeing areas such as finance, procurement, and human resources.
The programme is fully funded through a DfE bursary, covering the cost for successful applicants and ensuring accessibility across the sector.
Interest has been strong, with more than 300 applications received. Following a competitive selection process, 68 candidates secured a place, reflecting the programme’s quality and relevance to current school needs.
Serco will deliver the diploma through experienced and qualified industry professionals, combining practical insight with structured academic learning. The programme has been designed to allow participants to continue in their roles while studying, with a clear focus on developing applied skills that can be embedded directly into school operations.
Commenting on the contract award, Dean Hooton said:
“This contract builds on Serco’s longstanding partnership with government to deliver high quality, outcome focused education and skills programmes.”
For participants, the diploma provides a nationally recognised qualification and a clear pathway for career progression. For schools, it supports improved decision making and stronger operational leadership at a time of increasing complexity and pressure.
The contract reflects a shared commitment between Serco and the Department for Education to invest in people and build capacity within the education workforce.
